The DomStufen-Festspiele in Erfurt has become an integral part of the calendar of events in the Thuringian state capital. Every summer, Theater Erfurt transforms the 70 steps of the historic setting created by the Cathedral and the Church of St Severus into an opulent stage for operas or musicals, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors to date. For a long time now, guests have been coming not just from Germany, but also from many of its European neighbours, the USA, Brazil, China and Australia. And no wonder – after all, the Festival area lies in the heart of Erfurt’s stunningly beautiful Old Town, which bubbles over with Mediterranean flair in the summer and where the many cafés and restaurants also have plenty to offer. Since 2003, the Festival has borne the signature of General Director Guy Montavon, under whose leadership visitors have been able to experience unforgettable productions and first performances. The high level demand for tickets reflects the artistic achievements of Theater Erfurt and has led in recent years to an increase in the number of seats in the stands and in the number of performances.
