DomStufen-Festspiele in Erfurt 2011
Prince Tamino is rescued from a monstrous beast by the three ladies of the Queen of the Night. In return, the Queen charges him with the task of freeing her kidnapped daughter, Pamina. Accompanied by the charming yet timid bird-catcher Papageno, Tamino sets out on his journey. Along the way, he gradually realizes that evil is not where he first believed it to be.
Mozart’s late-stage masterpiece The Magic Flute is both a wise fairy-tale opera and a piece of universal theatre. Its brilliant fusion of tragic opera, magical fantasy, and folk theatre transcends all genre boundaries. For more than 200 years, The Magic Flute has captivated audiences of all ages in a wide variety of interpretations and productions.
The DomStufen Festival’s staging in Erfurt incorporates selected passages from the Vulpius version of the libretto – a text adaptation originally inspired by Goethe. This version clarifies some of the ambiguities of the original and offers added linguistic charm.
