While the Babylonian King Nabucco (Nebuchadnezzar) crushes the Israelite people, destroys their temple and proclaims himself a god, his adopted daughter Abigaille, eaten away by ambition, envy and hatred, tries to remove her sister Fenena from her path so that she can gain both her father’s throne and the love of the Hebrew Ismaele, her sister’s lover, for herself.

Based on episodes from the Old Testament, Giuseppe Verdi achieved worldwide success with his opera Nabucco. Here, the composer shows his mastery in giving a voice to a suppressed people or religious community in the form of his opera choruses and expressing their hopes and rebelliousness in effective tableaus. In the open air, this opera full of grand, highly emotional chorus pieces develops religious and political conflicts along with the pain of the oppressed and the unscrupulous lust for power.
