While the Babylonian King Nabucco (Nebuchadnezzar) subjugates the Israelites, destroys their temple, and seeks to elevate himself to the status of god, his adopted daughter Abigaille, consumed by ambition, jealousy, and hatred, attempts to remove her sister Fenena from her path and thereby win both her father's throne and the love of the Hebrew Ishmael, who is in league with her sister.
Based on an episode from the Old Testament, Giuseppe Verdi created a worldwide success with the opera Nabucco. The composer masterfully succeeded in giving voice to an oppressed people or religious community through his operatic choirs, expressing their hopes and rebellion in striking tableaux. Set in the open air, this opera, full of large, highly emotional choral numbers, unfolds religious and political conflicts, as well as the suffering of the oppressed and the unscrupulous lust for power of individuals.
