La Traviata
Through her impeccable taste, captivating charm, and beauty, Violetta has succeeded in becoming the most sought-after courtesan in Paris. In exchange for lavish gifts, she offers her company—and her body. When, at a party in her home, the young Alfredo confesses his sincere love to her, she finds herself torn between her independent lifestyle and her true feelings. She ultimately chooses Alfredo and moves with him to the countryside. Yet, two forces stand in the way of their happiness: one is the social ostracism Violetta faces; the other, her terminal illness. When Alfredo’s father compels Violetta to renounce his son, she writes Alfredo a farewell letter and returns to Paris. A scandal erupts at a ball: Violetta attempts to make Alfredo believe that she loves another man. In a fit of jealous rage, Alfredo hurls money at her feet as "payment for her amorous favors." A month later, Violetta lies on her deathbed. Alfredo returns, having been enlightened by his father regarding the true reason for Violetta’s departure. Violetta grants forgiveness, releases Alfredo, and dies.
With La traviata, a contemporary subject made its debut on the grand opera stage. The work’s distinctive quality lies in the tragedy of the everyday—a theme for which Verdi composed music of profound emotional intensity. Consequently, shortly after its premiere in 1853, the work embarked on a triumphant global journey that continues to this day.
