Jesus Christ Superstar
Jesus Christ Superstar was the first great commercial success for Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, before Evita, Cats and Phantom of the Opera. It is obvious from the music that Woodstock had been held not long before. Jesus Christ Superstar was in the British charts for weeks as a double LP before the authors adapted it for the stage and presented it on Broadway. The 1973 Hollywood film did the rest in making the work one of the most successful dramas of the 20th century, despite a number of conservative Christian protests.
It depicts the last seven days of Jesus of Nazareth, freely based on the Bible, but not as the story of the Passion – instead, it tells a tale of revolution, oppression, avarice and, of course, peace and love.
With Peter Lund, an old acquaintance is returning to his former home ground. Regular theatre audiences will best remember him in particular for his rock opera Jedermann, for which he was the lyricist and producer.
