A singing saw?!

This unique instrument will be featured in the children’s play "Der Bärbeiß"

At first glance, it looks just like a brand new saw from a toolbox, as if it had just been bought from a hardware store. However, the inscription on the blade reveals that this is no ordinary saw. It reads: “Original Feldmann’s Singing Saw – Marke Jäger / C. Feldmann, Remscheid”. This unusual instrument is often used in musicals, jazz and various mood-setting ensembles in the world of music. It will also feature in the children's play Der Bärbeiß at DOMINO – DomStufen-Festspiele in Erfurt.

Willi George, a freelance percussionist, will appear as a guest in the children’s play, performing on the singing saw, among other instruments. The band is completed by Ralph Neubert (alternating with Leonie Bulenda) on piano, Boyana Antonova (alternating with Eugen Mantu) on cello, and Thomas Richter on clarinet.

Depending on how much Willi bends the saw and how he plays it with a cello bow (which must first be coated with special rosin), the saw produces a sound reminiscent of a wolf’s howl. Anyone who secures a ticket for the play will be able to hear Bärbeiß howling at the moon in a deep, resonant voice.

Tickets are available online and from our visitor services team.
